Glenn was one of five people linked to the Patriots’ opening.
Aaron Glenn will not interview for the New England Patriots’ vacant head coaching position.
Despite the team putting in a request, the Detroit Lions’ defensive coordinator decided to decline the opportunity to meet with the organization. Tom Pelissero of NFL Network was first to report the news.
Glenn, 52, was one of five coaches linked to the Patriots’ opening. The team held in-person interviews with Pep Hamilton and Byron Leftwich on Tuesday, following by another with Mike Vrabel on Thursday. In addition, they will meet virtually with Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson on Friday.
New England also was trying to schedule a meeting with Glenn for the same day, according to a follow-up by Josina Anderson of CBS Sports. However, he already had meetings scheduled with the New Orleans Saints on Friday morning, and the Las Vegas Raiders in the afternoon.
Virtual interviews with coaching candidates still in the playoffs can last up to three hours, according to NFL rules.
With Glenn removing his name from consideration, the Patriots’ coaching search seems down to the four candidates mentioned above. Vrabel and Johnson are the clear frontrunners among them, with the team reportedly expected to come to an agreement within the next week.
