The New England Patriots opened a roster spot before commencing training camp this week.
New England released Jontrey Hunter on Monday. The linebacker signed as an undrafted free agent after six seasons at Georgia State.
Hunter registered 234 tackles, six sacks, seven forced fumbles, and three interceptions in 53 career games with the Sun Belt program. He recorded seven of his 96 tackles for a loss during his final year with the Panthers, who went 7-6 in 2023.
After playing in the 2024 Senior Bowl, Hunter didn’t hear his name called in April. The 6-foot-2, 236-pound linebacker signed with New England in May, but he didn’t make it to training camp.
The Patriots placed Hunter on the non-football injury list after rookies reported to camp early. Another undrafted newcomer, Terrell Jennings, is on the physically unable to perform list.
New England starts training camp for its first practice on Wednesday. Following a four-win season, its worst finish in the 21st century, the prestigious franchise begins a new era under Jerod Mayo.
Bill Belichick led the Patriots to 18 postseasons in his 24 seasons as head coach, but the organization parted ways with the six-time Super Bowl champion after they went 29-38 in four seasons since Tom Brady’s departure.
Fans will get their first glimpse at No. 3 pick Drake Maye, who looks to bring long-term stability under center after former first-round selection Mac Jones fell out of favor. Meanwhile, a defense that ranked No. 7 in yards allowed last year will welcome back Matthew Judon and Christian Gonzalez from early season-ending injuries.
