San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan revealed this week that he offered former New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick any job on his staff that he wanted but was politely declined by the eight-time Super Bowl champion.
It’s not much of a surprise that Belichick wouldn’t want to be someone’s underling after being just short of a saint in New England for the better part of a quarter-century. Absence also makes the heart grow fonder, and Belichick might be banking on teams becoming more desperate in 2025.
That hasn’t stopped fans from talking endlessly about the implications of both the offer and what the 49ers might have looked like if Belichick had taken it:
“That defense under Bill would’ve carried them all the way to a Lombardi,” one user declared.
“Would’ve been the greatest defense in NFL history,” wrote another.
“Bill wants to be a head coach and nothing else this really isn’t all that surprising,” a third pointed out.
Belichick is arguably the greatest defensive mind of all-time and the 49ers’ most recent failed Super Bowl run was widely seen as a failure on the defensive front. The former Patriots head coach would have corrected those failures in short order.
Would Belichick have been a good fit with the 49ers?
