There’s hope that the New England Patriots will be one of the more active teams in free agency. NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero appeared on 98.5 The Sports Hub’s “Felzer & Mazz” and shared his thoughts on where the Patriots stand.
“I would anticipate that they are very active,” said Pelissero. “…Listen it’s hard when you’re bad, and people didn’t know if the quarterback was gonna be any good. The good news this year is you’re still bad, but people now know this quarterback is good. Are the Patriots going to have to overpay in free agency? Probably, that’s just the nature of it.
“But you’re gonna have a much better selling point than, ‘Hey we’re going to pay you a little extra. And you get to play with this dude who, if we can just make this thing competent, has a chance to be really good.”
The Patriots have $130 million in salary cap space, as well as a talented young quarterback with Maye. They stumbled to a 4-13 record last season, but they have the assets to rebuild a respectable team under new coach Mike Vrabel.
Multiple free agents could appeal to a Patriots team looking to reload on both sides of the ball. Cincinnati Bengals wideout Tee Higgins and even Minnesota Vikings offensive tackle Cam Robinson are potential targets for New England.
Surrounding Maye with the right talent will be crucial to the Patriots’ success. What they do in the offseason will set the stage for what comes in the 2025 season and beyond.
