Many New England Patriots fans were excited about seeing Josh McDaniels return as offensive coordinator.
NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport believes even quarterback Drake Maye was rooting for a chance to work with the six-time Super Bowl champion assistant. He views the pairing of the 22-year-old quarterback and longtime offensive play-caller as greatly beneficial for the Patriots.
“I know Drake Maye was for sure rooting for this,” said Rapoport, when appearing on 98.5 The Sports Hub’s Felger & Mazz. “If you’re Drake Maye and you’d like to be a very good quarterback, having the guy who helped Tom Brady become a very, very good quarterback. Could do worse.
“Josh is one of the best there is. To me, from a professional standpoint, this is absolutely what Drake Maye was rooting for. And I know when it all got announced, he was extremely excited, as he should be. I think it’s very, very positive.”
McDaniels will be returning for a third stint as the offensive coordinator in New England, with Maye entering a crucial second season following a productive rookie campaign.
The Patriots need their young quarterback to take the next step in his development, and McDaniels has the experience to elevate and help maximize that talent. Look at what he did for Mac Jones, who was a rookie Pro Bowler for the Patriots right out of the gates.
Imagine what he could do with Maye.
