Holding the third overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft but not necessarily desperate for the available remaining quarterbacks, the New England Patriots are the probably in the best position to trade down with a team that wants one. As it turns out, their phones have already been ringing.
In a recent interview, Patriots general manager Eliot Wolf revealed that the team has gotten calls on their first few picks from “several different teams.” Wolf said that while the initial calls may have just been testing the waters, he believes that he might “hear some more things” as they get closer to making their pick.
“We’ve received calls on our first several picks from several different teams,” Wolf said, via the Patriots’ X account. “But it sounds like there are some teams that may be more motivated if you listen to the whispers out there — that we might hear some more things as we get on the clock.”
Reports today have suggested that the Patriots will draft UNC quarterback Drake Maye if nobody trades with them for the No. 3 overall pick. Quarterback is certainly a position where they could use an upgrade as Jacoby Brissett is currently penciled in as QB1 for now.
But the wider football world has seemingly grown cold on Maye after a disappointing 2023 season with the Tar Heels. In the span of a year he’s gone from being QB1B in the draft alongside Caleb Williams to an almost consensus QB3 – and that’s usually at best.
Will the Patriots pull the trigger on Maye, or will someone else swoop in and give the Patriots a haul to get him themselves?
