The New England Patriots have a starting quarterback heading into training camp.
Head coach Jerod Mayo told reporters on Tuesday that right now, Jacoby Brissett is the starter but the door is still open for Drake Maye to win it.
“It’s clear Jacoby is the most pro-ready,” Mayo said.
The Patriots are in no rush to start Maye since they’re going through a rebuild. They want to give him as much time to develop as possible before he’s ready to start a game.
Brissett has a lot of playing experience, having played in 79 games throughout his career. He was most recently with the Washington Commanders and played in three games last season, finishing with 224 passing yards and three touchdowns.
Before that, he spent the 2022 season with the Cleveland Browns and started in over half of their games while Deshaun Watson was suspended.
He’s also spent time with the Miami Dolphins, Indianapolis Colts, and was with the Patriots once before in 2016.
He’s compiled 10,574 passing yards, 51 touchdowns, and 23 interceptions while completing 61.3% of his passes.
The Patriots will start the regular season against the Cincinnati Bengals on September 8. Kickoff will be at 1 p.m. ET.
