Wilson is the Patriots’ current No. 4 at the cornerback position.
The New England Patriots tried to take advantage of their status as one of the worst teams in the NFL last season, and brought in several players through the waiver wire. Among them was Marco Wilson, who the Arizona Cardinals released in late December.
The Patriots beat out two other teams to bring Wilson aboard, and he has since developed into a serviceable option at wide receiver. While only serving as the No. 4 at the position behind Christian Gonzalez, Marcus Jones and Jonathan Jones, he has seen regular action lately and produced solid results.
In fact, head coach Jerod Mayo showered him with some serious praise this week.
“I would say Marco has perhaps the best feet of any of our corners,” Mayo said. “He’s a very quick-twitch guy. He’s doing a good job for us.”
Mayo speaking highly of Wilson’s footwork is notable given that he shares a room with some quick-footed cornerbacks, including All-Pro candidate Gonzalez. However, the statements are backed up on tape: Wilson has turned his impressive athleticism — he scored a 9.99 Relative Athletic Score before the 2021 draft — into on-field production.

In the first year of their rebuild, the Patriots are looking for building-block players to keep working with in the future. And while it remains to be seen whether or not Wilson will ever develop into anything more than a depth option, having him in the fold ensures that said depth at the cornerback position remains of high quality.
Not bad for a waiver claim.
