Andrews left the Patriots’ loss in San Francisco in the first quarter.
The New England Patriots’ saw several players leave their 30-13 loss to the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday with injuries, including David Andrews. The starting center and long-time team captain exited the game after the first drive due to what was later announced as a shoulder injury.
Andrews’ status remains unclear as of Wednesday morning. However, he did share an update of sorts on the latest episode of his Quick Snap Podcast.
“First of all, it’s frustrating,” the 32-year-old told co-host and former teammate Brian Hoyer. “Being hurt is a very frustrating thing, especially when you want to be out there playing. As a player, sometimes you have to make decisions if you being out there is the best thing for the team, and if you can perform.”
Andrews entered the game in San Francisco without any injury designation, and did not appear to get banged up in the nine snaps before his departure. He nonetheless was not able to finish the contest, forcing the team to insert backup Nick Leverett into the lineup in his place. New England ended up surrendering six sacks on the day, and gained only 73 rushing yards on 24 carries.
As for Andrews, his status heading into the upcoming Week 5 meeting with the Miami Dolphins is in question. He did say, however, that he did work out “a little bit” in the days since returning from the Bay Area.
“Some stuff I’m going to try to figure out here, and see what I can do to be the best player I can be on Sunday. That’s the big thing. Anybody can go out there and play; it’s not a question of that,” he said.
“But it’s trying to be effective and be a player, and I think that’s the human aspect of it more than just the football player — you want to be the best you can be, and making sure you can try to do that. Just trying to take it day by day right now and get some things weighed out, and I’m going to try to get better as quick as I can, and see where things go. Or what has to go. I’m just trying to figure all that stuff out.”
Andrews is no stranger to injuries. While he did play all 1,050 offensive snaps in 2023, he has appeared in every possible game in only four of his first nine seasons in the league. It remains to be seen in which category Year 10 will fall.
“It’s super frustrating,” he added. “I’ve been hurt throughout my career at times, and there are some things — some medical things — that you can’t really control. That’s one thing. For the most part, I’ve been pretty healthy football-wise. Just trying to take it day by day, see how I feel, see what I can improve, and go from there.”
