Free agent cornerback Jonathan Jones is open to change if he ends up staying with the New England Patriots in 2025.
The veteran defensive back has spent all nine of his NFL seasons playing in New England. Most of those years came under former coach Bill Belichick, and then he played for one season under coach Jerod Mayo.
Change is on the way once again with Mike Vrabel taking over as the Patriots’ new head coach. Jones revealed on Tuesday that he has already spoken with Vrabel ahead of free agency.
“I was in the facility a few weeks ago — ran into Vrabes,” Jones said, via NESN.com’s Keagan Stiefel. “We sat down and just talked more about life than football, right? You know, just sharing stories about his kids and where they’re at in life, me and mine. It was just good to be in the facility, but I haven’t really talked to anybody else. Free agency is coming up, so it’ll be fun.”
Jones had a productive season for the Patriots last year. He played in 17 games and recorded 57 tackles, six pass deflections and two forced fumbles.
He has been a key part of the Patriots’ secondary ever since his arrival to the organization as an undrafted free agent in 2016. He has played in 132 games with the organization, tallying 378 total tackles, 2.5 sacks, a forced fumble and 11 interceptions in his career.
It would be the end of an era if Jones wasn’t back in 2025. He’s one of the few remaining players from the Tom Brady Super Bowl era. Everything ends at some point.
In a few weeks, we’ll find out if Jones’ time in New England is finally up.
