The New England Patriots appear primed to draft either LSU quarterback Jayden Daniels or UNC quarterback Drake Maye with their No. 3 overall pick. But if the Patriots are in a position to draft Maye and not Daniels, one team legend feels that they should avoid Maye at all costs.
In a recent NFL Draft discussion, Patriots Hall of Fame safety Rodney Harrison made the case that the team should wait until the later rounds of the draft to address their quarterback position. He declared that there is “no way” the team should take Maye with their third pick if that’s how the draft board shakes up.
“There’s no way I’m spending the number three pick overall on Drake Maye. There is no way,” Harrison said.
Maye is widely seen as a top three quarterback in the draft with many arguing that he might even be the second-best after USC’s Caleb Williams. But as the draft process has gone on, there have been more and more holes poked at Maye and a lot of analysts have concluded that his ceiling just isn’t as high as the last two Heisman Trophy winners.
That said, Harrison’s take has led to a mixed reaction from Patriots fans. Some feel that he might be onto something here, while others have pointed out that his track record with scouting players isn’t exactly strong.
But unless the Patriots wind up trading down, it seems very likely that they’ll go quarterback with the No. 3 overall pick. Whether that pick winds up being Maye, Daniels or some other quarterback, we’ll just have to wait and see.
