After beginning a new era with the hiring of head coach Jerod Mayo, it seems the Patriots plan to take their time when it comes to their GM search.
According to Adam Schefter of ESPN (via Sophie Weller): “[The Patriots are] in no rush to hire a general manager. They might even wait until after the draft to hire a general manager.”

Fans were pretty surprised on social media.
“That seems like a huge mistake,” a user said. “I’m beginning to think more and more that Mayo is just being setup to fail.”

“Unorthodox if the plan is to hire a GM eventually,” reported Evan Lazar. “But most teams keep the majority of their scouting staff in place under a new regime until after the draft. Why? Those scouts have been doing months of legwork/prep. Their contracts usually run through the draft too.”

“They should be thorough and willing to hire someone they have no past relationship with,” another reporter commented. “But it’s too pivotal an offseason for the direction of this franchise to fill that role after the draft and the bulk of free agency.”

“This team is so amazingly screwed if Jonathan Kraft is the general manager,” a fan tweeted. “Poor Mayo. He is being set up to fail.”

New England holds the No. 3 pick in April’s draft, their highest pick since selecting Drew Bledsoe first overall back in 1993.
