The oddsmakers don’t see the Patriots improve to 2-2 on the year.
The New England Patriots and San Francisco 49ers are in a similar situation entering their Week 4 bout on Sunday. They are both 1-2, coming off a loss, and dealing with some injury woes.
And yet, the oddsmakers don’t give New England much of a chance. According to FanDuel, the Patriots open the week as 10.5-point underdog for their upcoming game in San Francisco. The over/under has been set at 39.5 points.
This marks just the fifth time this century that New England is heading into a regular season game as double-digit underdogs:
The #Patriots are 10.5-point underdogs for Sunday’s game at San Francisco.
This is the 5th time they’ve been greater than 10-point underdogs this century:

at Kansas City, Week 4 2020
at Indianapolis, Week 6 2001

Interestingly enough, they are 2-2 in those previous games including 3-1 against the spread. Obviously, though, past performance means little when it comes to taking on the 49ers this week — especially after a performance as lackluster as the one the team put forward last Thursday against the New York Jets.
Patriots vs. 49ers is set for a 4:05 p.m. ET kickoff on Sunday, Sept. 29.
