Christian Barmore had been diagnosed with blood clots at the start of training camp.
The New England Patriots will take the field without Christian Barmore for the remainder of 2024.
The 25-year-old defensive tackle has been placed back on the non-football illness list, five months after he was diagnosed with blood clots at the start of training camp, the organization announced Thursday.
“The New England Patriots are placing defensive lineman Christian Barmore on the reserve non-football illness list after he experienced some recurring symptoms that required further evaluation,” the team said in a statement. “We appreciate everything Christian did to return to the team this season, but our top priority is Christian’s health and wellbeing. We know that he will continue to receive tremendous care and we want to ensure that he gets the time he needs to come back stronger than ever.”

Barmore, who received treatment at Mass General Brigham in July, had initially been placed on the non-football illness list at the NFL’s 53-man roster deadline. Selected No. 38 overall in the 2021 draft class, the 6-foot-5, 315-pound Alabama product signed a four-year, $84 million extension last spring following a breakout campaign in Foxborough that included 64 tackles and 8.5 sacks across all 17 games. He stands 48 games, 11 starts, 139 tackles and 13.5 sacks into a tenure that has also brought nine batted passes and one forced fumble.
The Patriots officially activated Barmore on Nov. 16. The move arrived two days after his 21-day practice window opened.
Across four appearances since then, Barmore stayed in for 123 defensive snaps and recorded six tackles along with one sack. The former Crimson Tide national champion and first-team All-SEC selection carried a questionable game designation as recently as last weekend against the Arizona Cardinals.
He was listed as a limited participant on Wednesday’s injury report before not practicing on Thursday.
