The 2023 trade acquisition had reverted to injured reserve in August.
After two weeks of the regular season, Tyrone Wheatley’s stint on injured reserve has come to an end.
The New England Patriots reached an injury settlement with the offensive tackle on Monday, according to the NFL transaction wire, waiving him from injured reserve.
Wheatley, 27, had been let go with the injury designation amid training camp in August. He subsequently reverted to injured reserve in Foxborough after going unclaimed. Ahead is the opportunity to take the field again in 2024.
The 6-foot-6, 320-pound Wheatley was acquired from Cleveland Browns in exchange for running back Pierre Strong Jr. ahead of the league’s 53-man roster deadline in 2023. From there, he made the first two appearances of his career on special teams before being sent to IR due to knee injury.
New England started Wheatley’s 21-day practice clock in December, yet it expired without his activation. The converted tight end then saw his exclusive rights retained by the organization entering the new league year.
Undrafted in 2020 after making collegiate stops at Michigan, Stony Brook and Morgan State, Wheatley participated in The Spring League before signing his first NFL deals with the Chicago Bears and Las Vegas Raiders.
