New England is opening up a spot on its 53-man roster.
The New England Patriots and wide receiver Tyquan Thornton have pared ways. As first reported by Adam Schefter of ESPN and since confirmed by the team, it waived the former second-round draft pick on Saturday.
Parting ways with Thornton opened a spot on the Patriots’ 53-man roster. The team recently designated cornerback Alex Austin and defensive tackle Christian Barmore to return from injured reserve and the non-football injury list, respectively.
Indeed, the open spot was used to activate Barmore.
Thornton, 24, joined the Patriots as the 50th overall selection in the 2022 NFL Draft. The team actually traded up four spots to bring the speedy Baylor product on board. Needless to say, the investment did not work out as intended.
In two-and-a-half seasons as a Patriot, Thornton appeared in 28 games, catching 39 passes for 385 yards and a pair of touchdowns. He also carried the ball six times for 67 yards and another score. In 2024, he caught four passes for 47 yards in six games.
The Patriots are set to play the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday. Kickoff at Gillette Stadium is scheduled for 1 p.m. ET.
