MassLive’s Karen Guregian reported earlier Wednesday that the free agent had made his way to Foxborough for a visit.
Gibbens, 26, originally signed with the Tennessee Titans as part of the organization’s 2022 undrafted class. The product of Abilene Christian and Minnesota was waived at the 53-man roster deadline after his rookie preseason and later returned on the practice squad. A promotion followed that December. From there, he went on to appear in 29 games during his tenure.
On the heels of having his exclusive rights retained by the new head coach Brian Callahan’s Titans in 2024, Gibbens’ latest campaign ended on injured reserve in November due to ankle surgery. The 6-foot-3, 242-pound linebacker was not tendered as a restricted free agent as the calendar turned to March.
Gibbens made 20 starts while a member of the Titans. He totaled 167 tackles, setting a career high with 95 as an NFL sophomore, and had a hand in one interception. Along the way also arrived 1.5 sacks, including a split against Patriots rookie quarterback Drake Maye in last fall’s overtime meeting at Nissan Stadium.
ESPN’s Mike Reiss shared over the weekend that Gibbens was considering making a visit. He stands 1,078 snaps on defense and 466 snaps on special teams into his run.
New England added past Tennessee linebackers Harold Landry III and Robert Spillane to the defensive front as the new league year opened. Both overlapped with new defensive coordinator Terrell Williams and other familiar faces while in the AFC South.
The current linebacker room also features restricted free agent Christian Elliss, who recently visited the Las Vegas Raiders after being tendered at the right of first refusal.
