The New England Patriots signed Titus Leo off the practice squad of the Indianapolis Colts on Tuesday. In corresponding 53-man moves, the organization waived Ochaun Mathis and placed Curtis Jacobs on injured reserve.
Leo, 25, entered the NFL in the sixth round of the 2023 draft at No. 211 overall. The 6-foot-3, 250-pound former FCS All-American out of Wagner spent his rookie season on injured reserve. After clearing waivers at the league’s roster deadline in August, he agreed to remain with the Colts as the practice squad formed and was subsequently released and re-signed in September. Leo’s collegiate career spanned 234 tackles, including 40 tackles for loss and 13 sacks. He also had a hand in six forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries, three blocked kicks and one interception returned for a touchdown.
Mathis 25, had officially signed to New England’s active roster at the end of October after reaching the NFL limit in standard elevations. Through five appearances, he totaled 80 snaps on special teams while also spelling in off the defensive edges for 11 snaps. Mathis logged two tackles and one forced fumble before becoming a healthy scratch last Sunday. Prior arriving in Foxborough on the practice squad in August, the 6-foot-5, 260-pounder by way of Texas Christian to Nebraska entered the league with the Los Angeles Rams in the sixth round of the 2023 class at No. 189 overall. He saw action in eight games as a rookie.
Jacobs, 22, was awarded off waivers from the Kansas City Chiefs as the NFL’s cutdown deadline passed in August. The 6-foot-1, 241-pound undrafted rookie out of Penn State went on to appear in nine games before landing on injured reserve. Starting a pair, he recorded one tackle on defense and three tackles on special teams. Jacobs was also selected by the DC Defenders in the UFL draft after his Nittany Lions tenure spanned 170 tackles, 9.5 sacks, two interceptions, one forced fumble and one touchdown.
The Patriots began the week by activating cornerback Alex Austin from injured reserve and waiving fellow corner Marco Wilson. An open spot on the 53-man roster remains now.
