New England falls to 3-9 on the year.
Penalties and continued issues defending the pass were the key ingredients in an uncompetitive first half for the New England Patriots, which set the stage for a 34-15 loss to the Miami Dolphins.
New England showed glimpses of life rattling off 15 unanswered points behind Drake aMaye and Christian Gonzlez in the second half, but it was too little too late.
Here’s everything that went down in Miami on Sunday.

First Quarter
The Patriots lost the toss which resulted in Drake Maye taking the field first on Sunday. Their first drive of the game did not go far, as a false start by Vederian Lowe set up a 3rd-and-8 screen to Ja’Lynn Polk which picked up just seven yards.
Miami’s first drive got on the move with an 11-yard drive starter to Jonnu Smith. However, New England’s defense then held as Marte Mapu broke up a third-down pass to the tight end.
New England overcame a pair of false start penalties on both tackles to move across midfield on their next drive — highlighted by a pair of 14-yard gains by Antonio Gibson. A completion and scramble from Maye picked up 20 more yards before another penalty led to a 3rd-and-16, where a handoff to Stevenson picked up just three. Joey Slye’s 45-yard field goal then was no good as it hit the right upright.
Second Quarter
The Dolphins next drive started the same as the first with a completion to Jonnu Smith for a first-down. Keeping it in the air, Tua found back-to-back explosive gains to Jaylen Waddle then Tyreek Hill for 34 total yards. A penalty on Anfernee Jennings then gifted Miami a free first down on 3rd-and-3 inside the red area which led to a third-down touchdown to Jonnu Smith. [Patriots 0 : 7 Dolphins]
A first-down loss on the ground led to a 3rd-and-16, where rookie pass rusher Chop Robinson beat a chip and right tackle Trey Jacobs to get to Maye for a sack. New England then punted.
Miami’s offense got right back to work with the football needing just four plays — including another chunk gain to Jonnu Smith — to work outside the red area. After a pass breakup by Christian Elliss in the end zone, Tua hit Waddle for 14 yards on 3rd-and-9 to set up a goal-to-go. Two plays later, a screen to Achane went for a score. [Patriots 0 : 14 Dolphins]
New England’s next possession started by going backwards again, as Vederian Lowe’s third penalty of the half negated a 19-yard screen to Stevenson. Two short completions got the yardage back to face a 3rd-and-9, where Maye missed an open Pop Douglas following a miscommunication.
The Dolphins faced an immediate 3rd-and-9 of their own on their next drive, where Tua hit Waddle for 15 yards. Waddle’s big half continued as he hauled in a 19-yard gain three plays later — which was upheld after a challenge from Jerod Mayo. Tua then went back to Jonnu to move inside the red area before the two-minute warning. Two plays later, a pass to a wide open Achane went for a walk-in score. [Patriots 0 : 21 Dolphins]
Down three scores, New England got the ball with 1:50 left in the first half and avoided disaster as what looked like a Drake Maye sack fumble was called an incomplete pass. Another penalty on Lowe led to a 3rd-and-15 where Miami got home again with four pass rushers vs. seven blockers for a sack.
Quickly back with the ball, Waddle’s big half continued as their first play went for 29 yards. Back-to-back completions to Hill went for 27 more yards to move Miami inside the five-yard line. New England’s defense then held forcing three straight incompletions — two almost intercepted by Dugger — to force a field goal. [Patriots 0 : 24 Dolphins]
New England took a knee to end the half.
Third Quarter
The Patriots defense started the second half with a stop, as Christian Gonzalez took away Tyreek Hill on third-down while Christian Barmore recorded a sack.
A Miami defensive penalty picked up a first-down for the Patriots offense, before a hold on Mike Onwenu moved them right backwards. Getting the yardage back with a completion to Kendrick Bourne to lead to a 3rd-and-9, where Maye bought time out to his right before finding Bourne again for a first-down. Another offensive penally (Kayshon Boutte) pushed them back again before a double pass on 3rd-and-17 fell incomplete.
Miami’s second possession of the half started backed inside their own 10-yard line. The Dolphins moved the chains on the ground before going back to the air to move near midfield. The Patriots defense then got off the field on a 3rd-and-5 after Odell Beckham Jr. could not hold on to a dime from Tagovailoa with Marcus Jones making a late play on the ball.
New England’s next drive began with a big play as Pop Douglas stabbed a one-handed pass before picking up 27 yards. The positive plays ended there, as Vederian Lowe got beat on third-down and Maye lost a fumble that Miami recovered with poor ball security.
Taking over at the Patriots 25-yard line after the fumble, Miami needed just two plays to find the end zone as Waddle scored from 23 yards out. [Patriots 0 : 31 Dolphins]
Fourth Quarter
Another big 20-yard gain to Douglas started the Patriots following drive as a 16 yarder to Henry then moved the offense into Miami territory. A corner blitz resulted in a clean sack for Jalen Ramsey set up a 3rd-and-15, where Maye’s pass to Boutte, who committed OPI, was incomplete. Keeping the offense on the field on fourth-down, Maye bought time to his right and found an open Austin Hooper for a 38-yard touchdown. [Patriots 7 : 31 Dolphins]

New England’s defense quickly got off the field as Tua’s third-down pass to Beckham was incomplete with Marcus Jones tight in coverage.
The Patriots offense faced an immediate 4th-and-6 at their own 23-yard line, where Maye’s pass was incomplete but Bourne drew a DPI. On the following fourth-down, Maye went back to Bourne and the pass fell incomplete again — this time with no flag.
Miami took over on New England’s 37-yard line with Skylar Thompson taking over at quarterback. A handoff on second-down was muffed and scooped up by Christian Gonzalez who took it 63 yards for a touchdown. New England then added the two-point conversion. [Patriots 15 : 31 Dolphins]

Now a two possession game, Tua reentered at quarterback for the Dolphins. Following a pair of first-downs, Brenden Schooler chased down Tagovailoa on third-down for a sack to force a punt.
With 6:19 left in a two-score game, Drake Maye got to work by picking up a first down with two straight completions. That was all the success, as Maye’s poor check-down pass to Gibson while under pressure was intercepted.
Taking back over just shy of midfield, Miami’s offense picked up one first-down through the air before New England’s defense held strong. After a third-down run, Jason Sanders’ 51-yard field goal was good. [Patriots 15 : 34 Dolphins]
Two straight touches for JaMycal Hasty picked up 16 combined yards to start New England’s following possession. Then facing a 4th-and-2 on the other side of the two-minute warning, a screen to Douglas came up short of the sticks.
Miami kneeled out the clock.
