New England falls to 3-8 on the year.
The New England Patriots could not start their first winning streak in two years, as they dropped their Week 1 contest 28-22 to the the Los Angeles Rams.
While Drake Maye tossed two touchdowns as the Patriots offense put up 382 total yards, New England’s defense could not slow down Matthew Stafford, who threw four touchdowns of his own. A comeback bid then fell short as Maye threw an interception on the Patriots final drive.
Here’s everything that went down at Gillette Stadium.
Final Score: Patriots 22 : 28 Rams

First Quarter
The Rams won the toss and deferred, putting Drake Maye and the Patriots offense on the field first after a 46-yard return by Javon Baker. A pair of completion to Kendrick Bourne and Hunter Henry picked up a first-down before a chop block penalty on Rhamondre Stevenson moved the operation backwards 15 yards. An 11-yard run by the back helped set up a 3rd-and-13, where Maye’s pass went off Kayshon Boutte’s hands. New England then punted.
Los Angeles’ first offensive drive of the game started at their own 12-yard line, but immediately found some breathing room with a 38-yard catch-and-run by Puka Nacua. The Rams drive then stalled, as Matthew Stafford’s third-down pass to Cooper Kupp was incomplete.
New England’s second drive got started with a 14-yard screen to DeMario Douglas. On 3rd-and-7, Maye went back to Douglas, who was open over the middle after motioning into a bunch, for 28 more yards. A screen to Austin Hooper then picked up 18 yards inside the red area which led to two plays later as Maye found Bourne in the end zone for a 10-yard score. [Patriots 7 : 0 Rams]

An 18-yard run by Kyren Williams got the Rams offense on the move. Then facing a 3rd-and-4 just over midfield, a stunt nearly got Christian Elliss home but the pressure still helped force an incompletion.
Second Quarter
Back with the ball inside their 20, a 14-yard completion to Henry got things going for New England. After a short run by Gibson, Maye stepped up in the pocket and found Bourne, who took it for 18 more yards over midfield. Three straight runs by Gibson moved the chains yet again before New England faced a 3rd-and-7. Rolling out to his right, Maye came back over the middle to Henry for 17 yards — but an illegal formation on Vederian Lowe negated the play. On 3rd-and-12, a quick slant to Douglas would have drew a DPI but the ball was tipped at the line of scrimmage. New England then punted from their own 42 after an intentional delay of game.
Stafford hit Nacua for a 25-yard gain on the Rams first play before moving the chains again with a 10-yard completion to Demarcus Robinson. Rookie back Blake Corum then got things going on the ground with three straight runs for 21 yards until Nacua set them up at the five-yard line. Two plays later, a rollout right resulted in a wide open Cooper Kupp for a touchdown. [Patriots 7 : 7 Rams]
New England’s next possession faced an opening third-down, where Maye was hit from behind and lost the ball — which was recovered by the Rams.
Following the fumble, the Rams took over at the Patriots 12-yard line. They needed just one play to capitalize as Stafford laid one out to Nacua who hauled in a diving catch for a score. [Patriots 7 : 14 Rams]
Now trailing for the first time, a 10-yard run by Stevenson got things started for the Patriots offense. An encroachment call then set New England up with a 3rd-and-5, where Maye hit Henry for a conversion as the tight end worked through illegal contact. Over midfield, Maye beat a blitz to hit Douglas for 11 yards before Stevenson drew a face mask the following play to pick up 15 more. A false start on Michael Jordan and scramble from Maye then set up a 3rd-and-3 on the other side of the two-minute warning. Pressure forced a throwaway and field goal, which Joey Slye knocked through from 32 yards. [Patriots 10 : 14 Rams]
With 1:52 left in the half, LA quickly got on the move needing three plays to get over midfield. New England then forced a 4th-and-1 which saw Williams quickly pick up six on the ground. A false start then backed the Rams up — also forcing them to use their final timeout to avoid a 10 second runoff — which Nacua quickly got back with a 21-yard completion while getting out of bounds. Two end zones shots fell incomplete, leading to a chip shot field goal to end the half — which Joshua Party doinked off the right upright.
Third Quarter
The Rams started the second half with the football and quickly struck. With New England bringing pressure, Stafford hit Kupp over Jon Jones which left nobody else to beat as he took it 69 yards for a walk-in score. [Patriots 10 : 21 Rams]
Down double digits, New England picked up a pair of first downs to move into LA territory. After a five-yard rush by Marcus Jones, Maye found Henry for 15 yards inside the red area. A blown up screen to Stevenson then resulted in an unnecessary roughness call on the Rams to push New England to the five-yard line. Three plays later on third-and-goal, Stevenson was stuffed from the two. New England settled for a field goal. [Patriots 13 : 21 Rams]
Kyren Williams picked up 21 total yards on two straight runs to start Los Angeles’ next drive before Stafford converted a 3rd-and-1 on a sneak. Over midfield, the Rams found another chunk gain as Tutu Atwell hauled in a 21-yard completion. Two plays later, Stafford lofted a play-action pass to the back left corner of the end zone that Colby Parkinson hauled in for six. [Patriots 13 : 28 Rams]
Fourth Quarter
New England’s next drive appeared bleak, as Maye was sacked on second-down while his third-down pass was checked down. However, a personal foul on Jared Verse after the play gifted the Patriots 15 yards and a fresh set of downs. Penalties on Los Angeles continued to help New England, as Pop Douglas was taken down by a face mask after a short second-down completion. Maye then kept it himself with nobody open to move the chains again and set the offense up outside the red area before two touches to Stevenson picked up another first down. From the four, Vederian Lowe reported as eligible and released after a block as Maye hit him for a score. The extra point was then blocked. [Patriots 19 : 28 Rams]

New England’s defense forced LA into an immediate 3rd-and-10, where Stafford’s pass was complete to Kupp but short of the sticks. The Rams then punted.
The Patriots retook the field at their own 11, where Maye hit Boutte on a slant for 13 yards shortly before a big catch-and-run went to Bourne for 22 more. A pair of solid gains to each tight end helped pick up two additional first downs before New England reverted to the ground game which were stuffed to set up a 4th-and-1. Keeping the offense on the field, a false start by Ja’Lynn Polk then led to a field goal by Slye. [Patriots 22 : 28 Rams]
New England’s defense needed a stop with 4:53 remaining. Stafford’s first play went to Kupp for 18 yards before LA went to the ground game. Set up with a 3rd-and-3 over midfield, Stafford went right to Nacua for the first. The Rams then kept it in the air, where Keion White batted down a pass before Stafford hit Kupp for four yards. Facing 3rd-and-6, Stafford went downfield to Nacua which was broken up by Jonathan Jones. LA punted from New England’s 35-yard line.
Drake Maye took the field at his own 10-yard line with 2:14 remaining. A back shoulder ball to Kendrick Bourne, who worked through DPI, got things started for 18 yards. After the two-minute warning, Maye was taken down for a sack to set up a 3rd-and-13. Out of using their last timeout, a miscommunication between Maye and Douglas saw the pass go right to a Rams defender for an interception.
Stafford kneeled out the clock.
