Plus, is Terrell Williams the right man for the defensive coordinator job?
While the New England Patriots have put the finishing touches on their new coaching staff for next season, the Kansas City Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles are set to cap this season in Super Bowl LIX.
The Patriots and Eagles are familiar with one another on this stage, splitting two Super Bowls a little over a decade apart. Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs will look to defeat them for the second time in three years to become the first NFL team to win three Super Bowls in a row.
As for the Patriots themselves, hiring Josh McDaniels as the offensive coordinator drew the biggest headlines. Meanwhile, Terrell Williams being tabbed for defensive coordinator should not go overlooked.
The former Lions defensive line coach and run game coordinator will now be tasked with improving a New England defense that fell from seventh to 22nd in yards from 2023 to 2024. While the new Patriots coach has never called plays on defense, he does bring more than 25 years of experience with him.
Williams has been coaching since 1998 when he started as a defensive line coach at Fort Scott Community College. He worked his way up the ranks, coaching in the Big Ten and Big 12 before making his way to the NFL with the Raiders in 2012. He was hired by Mike Vrabel in Tennessee in 2018, where he coached the defensive line for six seasons, adding the assistant head coach title in his final year. He left for Detroit last season after Vrabel was fired.
What do you think of the move? And who are you rooting for in Super Bowl LIX?
