Former New England Patriots cornerback Malcolm Butler was arrested this month on DUI charges. He was detained in Rhode Island, according to court documents.
Butler, a two-time Super Bowl champion and former Pro Bowler, was arrested by the North Providence Police Department on March 16. He was apparently blocking traffic with his white Mercedes Benz.
It was reported that Butler told the police, “Just take me to jail.”
Butler had a “strong odor of alcoholic beverage” coming from his breath, per Daily Mail.
From Daily Mail:
Butler is also said to have been ‘sweating profusely’ and had ‘extremely slurred and delayed speech along with severely bloodshot watery eyes,’ according to the police report obtained by WBZ-TV.
One week prior to Butler’s arrest, he announced his retirement from the NFL. It marked the second time he retired.
“I did the best I can do,” Butler said, via Pro Football Talk. “Walking away from the game feeling comfortable. Everybody can do more, but I’m satisfied with my career. It’s time to move on and transition.”
Butler, who is known for his game-saving interception against the Seahawks in Super Bowl XLIX, finished his pro career with 406 tackles, 82 passes defended, 17 interceptions and five forced fumbles.
Butler is due in court this Thursday for a hearing.
