The New England Patriots appear primed to completely revamp their quarterback room now that Bill Belichick is gone.
According to Mark Daniels of MassLive, the Patriots have a two-fold plan at quarterback for the 2024 offseason. The plan is to draft a quarterback with their No. 3 overall pick and sign a veteran in free agency who can start in the rookie’s place if need be.
“Drafting a signal caller is only one step in this process. According to a source, the Patriots plan on signing a veteran free agent quarterback. The team is also in no rush to start a rookie immediately and could play that veteran if they think it would benefit the younger quarterback to sit for a season,” Daniels wrote.
The Patriots have the No. 3 overall pick, which effectively guarantees that a top quarterback prospect will be available to them. We can expect the Patriots to do a lot of due diligence on those prospects if this is, in fact, the plan.
Naturally, this would pretty much spell the end of Mac Jones’ three-year tenure as the Patriots’ starting quarterback. He went 2-9 as a starter this year and is 8-17 over the past two seasons.
Jones’ accuracy, passer rating and touchdown rate have all declined year-over-year since his rookie season.
With Alex Van Pelt taking over as offensive coordinator and nearly all of Belichick’s disciples now gone, it really looks like the Patriots are ready to completely wash their hands of the six-time Super Bowl champion and his influence over their roster.
Who do you think the Patriots will sign as their veteran quarterback?
