Tyron Smith shouldn’t have a shortage of suitors when hitting free agency. One prestigious organization is reportedly eyeing the offensive tackle.
According to MassLive’s Mark Daniels, the New England Patriots are expected to pursue Smith this offseason.
After playing just four games in 2022, Smith bounced back with a second-team All-Pro designation last season. He’s spent his entire 13-year career with the Dallas Cowboys, where the former first-round pick has started 161 games and earned eight Pro Bowl nods.
Per Pro Football Focus, Smith had the fourth-highest grade and best pass-blocking mark of all offensive tackles. However, his prolific Cowboys career could be over.
NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport called it “unlikely” Smith re-signs with Dallas. The Cowboys are already over the cap with big extensions for Dak Prescott, CeeDee Lamb, and Micah Parsons looming.
On the other hand, only the Washington Commanders have more cap space than New England. According to Spotrac, the Patriots are approximately $91.5 million under the record-setting $255.4 million cap.
Head coach Jerod Mayo walked back his declaration that the Patriots were ready to “burn some cash” in free agency. Yet the organizations should still add some pieces this offseason, and the offensive line is a sensible place to start.
Trent Brown’s contract was voided in February without reaching an extension, so New England needs at least one new starting tackle. Michael Onwenu and Riley Reiff are also unrestricted free agents.
It remains to be seen what quarterback that offensive line will protect in 2024. The Patriots have the No. 3 pick in this year’s draft, but Daniels said they’re also seeking a veteran free agent such as Jacoby Brissett, Gardner Minshew, or Joe Flacco.
