For the first time since the Los Angeles Rams hired him in 2017, Sean McVay is no longer the NFL’s youngest head coach.
On Friday, the New England Patriots named linebackers coach Jerod Mayo as their new head coach, replacing Bill Belichick. Born on February 23, 1986, Mayo is younger than McVay by exactly 30 days.
The Patriots and Rams are scheduled to play against each other in 2024. We’ll be getting a battle of the young gun head coaches (barring something unforeseen).
At 37, Jerod Mayo now will become the NFL’s youngest head coach, taking over a title that Sean McVay had held since being named the Rams head coach in 2017; Mayo is a month younger than McVay.

Jerod Mayo’s appointment as head coach of the New England Patriots was a controversial one. He has just five years of coaching experience, all as the insider linebackers coach under Bill Belichick.
Many Patriots fans argued fiercely for former Tennessee Titans head coach and Patriots legend Mike Vrabel to get the job.
But Patriots owner Robert Kraft went with Mayo after working out a succession plan with Belichick last year.
The bigger question is whether Mayo can pick up where Belichick left off.
