With the Atlanta Falcons and Carolina Panthers filling their head coaching vacancies today, Bill Belichick’s odds of becoming a head coach for the 2024 season have diminished considerably. For one sports radio host and longtime Boston resident, it’s due to Belichick’s diminished reputation.
In a series of posts on X today, Damon Amendolara pointed out that the last four years have “crushed” Belichick’s reputation. Specifically, the “meandering years post-Brady” while also thinking that Tom Brady wasn’t good enough to play anymore.
Amendolara noted that all seven teams looking for new head coaches along with several others that could have made a change could have gone for Belichick and all passed on him.
“No one had done more to unravel a reputation than Bill Belichick. The four meandering years post-Brady, while also thinking Brady was cooked, has crushed his reputation. There were 7 openings + 3 contenders (DAL/PHI/BUF) who could’ve made an opening. They all passed on Bill,” he wrote.

It’s a good point to be sure. Just a few years ago there probably would have been 28 teams who would give anything to make Belichick their head coach.
But time – especially time without championships – can change a person’s reputation in a hurry.
Belichick may be a future Hall of Famer and the greatest head coach of all-time, but nobody sees him as the best head coach available anymore.
