Tom Brady Sr. has no trouble praising Bill Belichick for his role in building the New England Patriots’ dynasty, but he’s also unafraid to criticize the legendary head coach where it feels warranted.
In a new interview with The Boston Globe, Brady Sr. called Belichick “the best coach in football, bar none” and said he didn’t think it was necessarily “fair” that many people were saying his son was alone responsible for Belichick and the Patriots’ success.
However, Brady Sr. also argued that the 71-year-old coach’s “interpersonal skills are horrible” and his ego partially led to his downfall in the years after Tom Brady left New England.
“How many times has he said — back in ‘15 or ‘16 — that he wanted to win without Tommy? When he went without Tommy, he didn’t know what he was losing. You’re losing more than just a quarterback,” Brady Sr. told The Globe’s Cristopher Gasper.
“Ego sometimes gets in the way of things. I think it did with Bill. Now, he’s in a situation where he’s gotten crucified for the last few years by everybody and a lot of luster has come off his rose.”
In his four seasons post-TB12, Belichick went just 29-38 with one playoff appearance. After a 4-13 showing in 2023, he and the Patriots agreed to part ways.
Currently, Belichick remains unemployed with one team, the Washington Commanders, still looking for a new head coach.
