Things didn’t work out for Chaim Bloom in Boston, but he will have an opportunity to redeem himself in St. Louis.
Cardinals owner Bill DeWitt Jr. revealed a significant organizational shakeup Monday when he announced Bloom will replace John Mozeliak as team president of baseball operations after the 2025 season. Mozeliak took over as St. Louis general manager in 2007, and the Cards have racked up 10 playoff appearances — including two World Series appearances and the 2011 championship — under his watch.
That said, St. Louis hasn’t won a postseason series since 2019, and the organization soon will turn to Bloom to spearhead a turnaround.
“We’ve always prided ourselves on drafting and developing our own players,” DeWitt said in a statement, per ESPN. “It’s clear we need to make significant changes to get back to this model. Our baseball decisions going forward will focus on developing our pipeline of players, giving our young core every opportunity to succeed at the major league level.”
Bloom joined the Cardinals in January as an advisor to Mozeliak. He previously spent nearly four years with the Red Sox, who went 267-262 in his tenure as chief baseball officer and came within two wins of the 2021 World Series. Boston cut ties with Bloom in mid-September of last year and replaced him with Craig Breslow a little over a month later.
The 41-year-old’s remarks after receiving the promotion in St. Louis indicated he will be aggressive as the Cardinals’ lead of baseball operations.
“It takes boldness and humility to get on top and to stay there,” Bloom said in a statement. “And if you stand still and rest on your laurels, for even a moment, you get beat. To catalyze that change, ownership has given the green light for us to make real investments across the department.”
