Sink or swim
The Red Sox bullpen might be an issue, or the Astros might have the Red Sox number. After sweeping the Red Sox in Fenway last week, Houston scraped across a run in the eighth inning to tie the game before winning it in the ninth. Yordan Alvarez is nearly impossible to get out, and it feels like he’s coming up in big spots every inning.
Nick Pivetta goes for the Red Sox in his second start following a brief hiatus to get his legs back underneath him. The Astros trot out Ronel Blanco, who only managed to get through four innings in the series opener at Fenway.
At 4.5 games out of the wild card, it’s now or never for the Red Sox. A series with the Twins is still on the calendar, but they’ll need to stay in touch with the AL Central teams if they want that series to matter.
First pitch is at 8:10 PM ET on WEEI and NESN.
