Can the Red Sox redeem themselves?
After completing a road trip against the Orioles and Astros with a winning record, Boston’s struggles at home continued with an embarrassing 12-2 loss to the Diamondbacks to open up the homestand. The Red Sox won’t have an easy night ahead as they look for redemption, though, as they will face Arizona’s ace in Zac Gallen and his 3.85 ERA.
But since the beginning of July, in Gallen’s last nine outings, he has not been up to his usual standards, posting a 5.24 ERA while opponents slash .293/.369/.424 against him. The Sox will look to keep this trend going to pick up the ever-important second game of the series.
Boston will trot out Kutter Crawford, who also has not been his sharpest as of late, posting an 8.90 ERA since the All-Star break and allowing 14 home runs in six starts.
Thanks to a Twins loss last night, the Red Sox still sit 3.5 games back of the final Wild Card spot. But they will really need to rip off a run of good games, and soon, if they ever want to pull ahead in this race instead of playing catch-up and relying on other teams losing to climb up the ranks. A series win against the rising Diamondbacks would be a great way to get some confidence back in this team.
Let’s see if those yellow jerseys have anything in them today!
First pitch at 4:10 ET on WEEI and NESN.
