It’s the last Friday night Fenway of the season.
And so, the final series of another fruitless year is upon us.
Nick Pivetta will take the mound tonight in what could be his final start in a Red Sox uniform. If so, his most memorable innings here came against this very Rays team in October of 2021, when he helped pitch the Sox to the ALCS. Unfortunately, the Sox haven’t been able to get back to the postseason since, and sadly, the atmosphere at Fenway Park will likely reflect that over the weekend.
In a dream scenario, this will be the final series of this era of empty Red Sox baseball, and when they play their next one in the spring, it will dawn a new era of competitiveness, and usher in a renewed buzz around this team that was once commonplace around these parts for decades.
Until then though, this is the last series of Red Sox baseball until next year, and boy is it a depressing one.
