It’s now or never!
In a series the Red Sox must sweep to have any chance of remaining in the Wild Card hunt, they will send Richard Fitts to the mound to make his third career start.
Fitts actually hasn’t allowed an earned run in either of his first two starts as both runs he did allow were unearned. At the same time though, he’s only struck out four guys while also walking four guys in 10.2 inning of work over those starts, so the underlying numbers aren’t great.
The Twins meanwhile have been in total collapse mode since August 17th and are now just 10-20 in their last 30 games. As a result, the Tigers, who sold at the deadline, have tied them for the final Wild Card spot. Of course, the Red Sox haven’t been much better over that stretch and are just 11-19 over their last 30 games.
Both teams are probably happy to see each other on the schedule, but Mother Nature might not be as a batch of rain lurks offshore in the Gulf of Maine and threatens to pinwheel in as the evening progresses. We’ll see if they can get the game in before that happens and if Sox have any pulse left if they do.
