Don’t get excited but also don’t not get excited?
TGIF.
In their hunt to return to respectability in the baseball world the Red Sox have enlisted David Ortiz, among others. And Big Papi has one goal: Juan Soto.
“I see him on the Red Sox. I’m telling you the truth. I see him there unless something different happens because right now everyone wants him, but even I am doing my due diligence because I would like to have that horse on my team,” Ortiz said in an interview with EL VOCERO that was translated from Spanish to English. “Soto is a phenomenon that everyone wants because he is a full package, and whoever signs him for the next 12 years will be guaranteed a couple of championships.”
Does this mean anything? Again, most likely not.
But if you’re going to send an ex-player to do recruiting there’s probably no one better than David Ortiz to sell a free agent on the Sox and Boston.
What we know: Soto is going to sign for at least a decade and at least $500 million dollars. Probably more of each. Though who knows, maybe he’s cool with a half billion and he’d still be 36 and could play out his final years in another city.
The Red Sox can offer just as much money as the Mets, Dodgers, and Yankees. The question is will they?
At least they’re being connected to the top of the market this year (although I do believe they made a push for Yamamoto but he might have always been ready to play with Ohtani). Soto, Blake Snell etc. The 81-81 club had a number of bright spots. It’s not like convincing Jordan Montgomery to play in Boston, which ultimately never happened.
Talk about what you want and be good to one another.
