According to Alex Cora on WEEI, Rafael Devers will be the Red Sox’s full-time designated hitter in 2025, allowing Alex Bregman to take over at third base. Devers’ situation has raised plenty of questions, especially given his recent frustrations. He has yet to play in a Spring Training game this year and even considered requesting a trade out of frustration. It’s been a tough situation to watch, despite the high expectations for the team this season.
Rafael Devers Moves to DH with Alex Bregman Taking Over at Third
Overall, Cora and Devers appear to be on good terms—for now. Devers has made a significant career decision by transitioning to a full-time designated hitter role, potentially following in the footsteps of David Ortiz. As one of the best pure hitters in baseball, the 27-year-old has already hit 200 home runs, making him an ideal fit for the DH spot.
With Alex Bregman taking over at third base, the Red Sox infield has seen a major defensive upgrade. The addition of Kristian Campbell at second base further strengthens the group, giving Boston two promising new faces in the infield. Will this plan work? Most likely, given Bregman’s proven ability and Campbell’s potential.
The bigger question is whether Devers will fully embrace this role long-term. To Cora, he believes so, emphasizing that both he and Devers are focused on what’s best for the team. “We are all in the winning business,” Cora said to the Red Sox’s radio flagship. “Alex is going to play third, and Raffy is going to DH.”
That officially wraps up a roughly six-week saga that started when the Red Sox signed Bregman to a three-year, $120 million deal, which includes an opt-out option after each of the first two seasons. Over the past four seasons, Devers has averaged 32 home runs, 96 RBI and an .873 OPS.
