Saturday’s broadcast proved to be a window into not only what was, but also, what should have been.
In a sequence of events that turned out to be an eye opening checkpoint on where the current Red Sox broadcast situation stands, NESN lost control of the right to televise Saturday’s game against the White Sox when Fox picked it up as their game of the week.
This in itself was not unusual. Fox always grabs a handful of Saturday games from NESN every year. What was unusual however is who Fox put on the play by play for this contest: Don Orsillo. Nearly ten years after NESN fired him, Red Sox fans got a brief and delightful reminder of the way things used to sound – And boy did it sound good!
Hours before first pitch, Tyler Milliken foresaw the emotional evening ahead, and posted about it on Twitter.
Me getting ready to listen to Don Orsillo call a Red Sox game tonight.
— Tyler Milliken ⚾️ (@tylermilliken_) September 7, 2024
It would be just the tip of the iceberg on this topic. Once the game got underway, the passion and support for Orsillo started pouring in from all around New England:
Don Orsillo. This is refreshing.
— Matt McCarthy (@MattMcCarthy985) September 7, 2024
Getting rid of Orsillo was a travesty. This is your reminder.
— Paul Hayden (@PHayden108) September 8, 2024
And oh boy were we about to be reminded:
Turned on the Sox game only so I could hear a little Don Orsillo. Man, I miss him in Boston.
— Mark Ruggiero (@markjruggiero) September 8, 2024
Hearing Orsillo call a Sox game again had me emotional I really miss him
— Jordan ❤️⚾️ (@swaymaye) September 8, 2024
Listening to Don Orsillo call a Red Sox game in 2024 and reminiscing about clutch David Ortiz at-bats is borderline pornographic for Red Sox fans in the 00s.
— Zach Anderson (@zjanderson) September 8, 2024
Hearing Don Orsillo call a must-win game in 2024 was probably the most therapeutic experience of the year for me
— Evan Beard (@evanb157_) September 8, 2024
Fans were even singing Orsillo’s praises from across the ocean.
It’s 2:06am and I have the loudest thunderstorm I can remember in years (I love storms), and the Red Sox have actually scored some runs, and Don Orsillo is on the call. Absolutely worth being awake for! (-@06Perrettana)@redsox #redsoxnation #dirtywater #thunder
— UK Red Sox Fans (@UKRedSoxFans) September 8, 2024
Not surprisingly, his call of Tyler O’Neill’s first inning home run was met with widespread praise.
Great to hear @DonOrsillo with an amazing home run call for the Red Sox! https://t.co/yV9hZLidwH
— James Stewart ☝️ (@IAmJamesStewart) September 7, 2024
A taste of what games should still sound like. Gracias Don Orsillo. https://t.co/jIYDi9BKWk
— Mike From Woburn (@MikeFromWoburn) September 8, 2024
From there, it didn’t take long for the posts of regret and sadness surrounding his departure to roll in.
Mannnnnn why’d they take Don Orsillo away from us https://t.co/hm5wsCK79H
— KutterIsKing (@KutterIsKing) September 7, 2024
I tell myself I don’t miss Don Orsillo. I’m lying to myself every time. https://t.co/Fig2pYFYau
— Ryan Graywacz (@Graywacz) September 8, 2024
Don Orsillo calling this game is so bittersweet. Guy should’ve had a job calling Sox games for life
— Professor P (@N_Primetime) September 8, 2024
Not gonna lie, I teared up a little bit listening to Don Orsillo broadcast this game tonight, very nostalgic, my childhood flashing before my eyes
— Gabagool and Moozadell (@TurdFerguson781) September 8, 2024
God I miss Orsillo. Maybe more than any player. https://t.co/epryrJc3Bl

— Jared Carrabis (@Jared_Carrabis) September 7, 2024
Along with the melancholy, there was also anger:
I’ll never forgive you for sending off Don orsillo @John_W_Henry
— Piry (@PrimeTimePiry) September 8, 2024
And jokes noticing the Boston bats woke up when he arrived in the booth.
Don Orsillo is back and the Sox think it’s 04 or 07 or 13 and that’s the formula. Lock the door to the booth. https://t.co/gZSEtWY6Dz
— Dorvid (@DorvidGoldy) September 7, 2024
Don’t let Orsillo leave the booth. He has to live there the rest of the season. Those are the rules.
— Steve Perrault (@Steve_Perrault) September 7, 2024
And it wasn’t just all reminiscing praise over past events either. Orsillo was dropping a few gems during this broadcast, and clever fans were quick to notice.
He absolutely dropped that “full throttle” on purpose. Masterclass
— Corey (@Otis607) September 7, 2024
And then of course, with a scene like this, the comparisons to Dave O’Brien began.
Nothing against Dave O’Brien, I don’t mind him at all, but hearing Orsillo tonight was like Halle berry making love to my ears
— Samrai Kahp (@KahpSamrai) September 8, 2024
Man, Orsillo is sooo much better than OB. Even in a meaningless game he brings the excitement. Really wish he never left.
— Eric DeWallace (@EricDeWallace) September 8, 2024
Don Orsillo has shown more excitement for the Red Sox in this half inning than DOB has shown all season.
— Kate (@_Katie_Mack) September 7, 2024
— GMagz (@b0nerjams_03) September 8, 2024
Man, Orsillo is so so good. No Eck/Jerry/Orsillo and Sox broadcasts have never been the same. @nesn
— Andrew (@boobiegrinnin) September 8, 2024
It’s been 9 years and Orsillo hasn’t missed a best. We LOST!!!!!!!!!
— Jake (@JakeWallinger) September 8, 2024
And naturally, as unrealistic as it may be, the only place you could go from here was people demanding Don’s return.
If John Henry wants to start fixing some of his wrong doing, find a damn way to bring Don Orsillo back to NESN.
— Boston Strong (@BostonStrong_34) September 7, 2024
Man it was awesome to hear Orsillo on that call. They should give whatever to get him back here.
— Rayshawn Buchanan (@_thebigwale) September 8, 2024
Too bad Orsillo isn’t back permanently!
— MoDawg (@MoDawg81) September 8, 2024
Trade Dave O’Brien to the Padres for Don Orsillo
— Paul C (@beethoven1989) September 8, 2024
Don Orsillo should still be in Boston!!
— Jeff Bernor (@jeff_bernor) September 8, 2024
Even if he’s not coming back and bridges are forever burned, some folks were just thankful to have this one night where everything felt right again for a few hours.
Thank you for tonight @DonOrsillo ❤️ pic.twitter.com/lSYPlNR8uS
— Boston Strong (@BostonStrong_34) September 8, 2024
Today we all felt like we got to come home again @DonOrsillo. Thank you. ❤
— Caren (@redsox1234) September 8, 2024
For me personally, it was astounding how good listening to Don Orsillo call a Red Sox win felt. Nostalgic, cathartic, and thrilling all at once! I always knew I missed it, but after experiencing it again tonight, I didn’t realize how much.
Thanks Don!
