The latest news, notes, and rumors about the Red Sox.
Earlier in the offseason, we noted that there seemed to be a bit of rift in the front office, with Alex Bregman being one of the biggest flashpoints. If reports were to be believed, Alex Cora and Sam Kennedy were pushing hard to add the Astros infielder, while Craig Breslow was against the move. Almost two months later, it seems this divide still persists. The Globe now reports that Breslow is more or less content to enter the season with the roster as is, believing that the outsized potential of rookies Roman Anthony, Kristian Campbell, and Marcelo Mayer will adequately boost the offense. Kennedy and Cora, on the other hand, are still pushing to add an established right-handed bat. (Peter Abraham, Boston Globe)
And, indeed, speaking to the press yesterday at truck day, Kennedy repeated that adding a right-handed bat is “still a goal” of the Red Sox offseason. (Boston Globe)
And the fact of the matter is that, in light of the departure of Tyler O’Neil and his 31 homers from the right side, the Red Sox lineup is worse on paper right now than it was in 2024… unless you think that better health from Trevor Story and Triston Casas, along with some semblance of production at second base, can make up the gap. Justin Turner is still out there. Could he be the righty bat the Sox or looking for, or will the improvement come from elsewhere on the roster? (Ian Browne, MLB.com)
JD Martinez is still a free agent, too. But, even though he doesn’t know where he’ll be playing in 2025, he knows where he’ll be playing in 2026: on the pickleball court. (Chris Cotillo, MassLive)
