News and notes from around Red Sox Nation.
Well, this has been obvious for a while now, but the Red Sox finally made it official: Brayan Bello will begin the season on the IL. There are no major concerns about his health at this point, but a sore shoulder has put him behind the rest of the pitching staff. He is only expected to miss a couple of starts. (Amin Touri, Boston Globe)
And Bello isn’t the only prominent Red Sox player who is behind schedule. The Sox had expected Rafael Devers to make his spring debut tomorrow, a debut that was already pushed back a week as he recovers from a gimpy shoulder. Now, he’s not expected to make his debut until this weekend. (Ian Browne, MLB.com)
Maybe Raffy is just bummed out that he’s not going to get to embarrass Gerrit Crochet this year. The Yankees ace will under go Tommy John surgery and miss the entire season, leaving the AL East wide open. (Chad Jennings, The Athletic)
Speaking of returning from injury, it’s been a bumpy spring for reliever Liam Hendriks, who is working his way back from Tommy John surgery. But despite the poor results and dip in velocity, Alex Cora says the Aussie is healthy and just needs time to ramp back up. (Peter Abraham, Boston Globe)
With a stomach bug ravaging the Red Sox clubhouse, the once crowded outfield doesn’t look so crowded anymore. Both Wilyer Abreu and Roman Anthony have lost a lot of weight and may not be ready for opening day, possibly opening up a spot for journeyman Trayce Thompson. (Sean McAdam, MassLive)
But at least Roman Anthony will look good when he does recover. He’s got a brand new suit courtesy of Alex Bregman, who also bought some new threads for Marcelo Mayer and Kristian Campbell. (Rob Bradford, WEEI)
