News and notes from around Red Sox Nation.
Get in, losers, we’re doing Full Throttle again — only this time it’s coming from Craig Breslow, not Tom Werner. Speaking at the GM meetings this week, Breslow told the assembled media that the team has “asked our fans to sacrifice a lot to be patient as we build the foundation that would enable us to meet those goals. I think we’re here. I think we’re ready to deliver.” And while Scott Boras obviously has a financial incentive to portray the Red Sox as big spenders once again, the super agent also seems to think the Sox are ready to play. (Jen McCaffrey, The Athletic)
Only time will tell if “ready to deliver” takes on the life that “full throttle” did, but Breslow certainly is putting a lot on the line right now, plainly stating that the Red Sox “have to” secure a frontline starter and “raise the ceiling of the rotation.” (Alex Speier, Boston Globe)
And to that end, there’s a lot of smoke developing around a Garrett Crochet trade with the White Sox. The Red Sox are reportedly “right in the thick” of Crochet bidding, and there’s some speculation that Wilyer Abreu could headline the deal. (Sean McAdam, MassLive)
As much as I love Wliyer, it would be hard not to jump at a Crochet deal that doesn’t necessitate sending Roman Anthony the other way. Craig Breslow is certainly a fan of baseball’s number one prospect. (Christopher Smith, MassLive)
With the emergence of Anthony, there’s likely going to be an outfield crunch coming. But that’s apparently not stopping the Red Sox from once again considering a free agent deal for Teoscar Hernandez, who just won the World Series with the Dodgers after failing to come to an agreement with the Sox last year. (Greg Dudek, NESN)
As for the players who are already here, it sure would be nice if Raffy Devers could put these nagging injuries behind him. To that end, he’s revamping his offseason training program and hoping to gain strength and durability. (Alex Speier, Boston Globe)
