Trevor Story, Lucas Giolito not expected to miss much time.
No team gets through spring training with a healthy roster. This is particularly true with respect to pitchers, whose injury risk is highest between February and May. We saw this last year with Lucas Giolito, who missed his entire first season with the Red Sox after injuring his arm in Spring Training. This year, we may be seeing it again this year with… Lucas Giolito. The righty left yesterday’s game with another injury. Thankfully, though, this one is to his hamstring, not his arm, and there are no major concerns at this point. (Julian McWilliams, Boston Globe)
No major concerns for Trevor Story, either. Story was scratched from yesterday’s starting lineup with back tightness. He won’t play in tonight’s game either, but was back on the field taking grounders today and hopes to play tomorrow. (Adam London, NESN)
The injuries to Giolito and Brayan Bello will put some increased strain on the Red Sox pitching depth to start the season. That’s good news for Richard Fitts and Quinn Priester, the leading candidates to step into the rotation. Hunter Dobbins should be in the depth mix later this season, but for now he’s being sent to minor league camp. (Christopher Smith, MassLive)
Illness has prevented Roman Anthony from taking advantage of any injuries to play his way onto the Opening Day roster, but he’ll make his way to the big leagues at some point this year. And as this piece detailing his lifelong baseball development shows, he’s been looking like a future star for a long time. (Jen McCaffrey, The Athletic)
If Anthony makes it to the big leagues before May 13 of this year, then he won’t even be able to legally celebrate with a beer, as he’ll still be under 21. That’s a shame, because Cisco Brewing is opening a new beer hall on the old Tasty Burger site on Boylston Street behind Fenway. (Aaron Pressman, Boston.com)
