News and notes from around Red Sox Nation.
Rafael Devers is not going to play again in 2024, of course, as his bizarre, season-long shoulder injury (which is now two shoulder injuries!) has finally put him on the shelf. But there is good news: MRIs were conducted on both shoulders over the weekend, revealing nothing more damaging than inflammation, so Raffy will not need offseason surgery on either shoulder. But the Red Sox docs need to figure something out, because Devers said he never felt like himself this year. (Julian McWilliams, Boston Globe)
Also done for the year with an iffy shoulder is Kenley Jansen. In his case, though, this probably also means his time with the Red Sox is over, as Jansen enters the offseason as a free agent. (Rob Bradford, WEEI)
With Jansen out, any remaining save opportunities will go to Justin Slaten or Chris Martin. As Slaten is currently pegged to be a major part of the 2025 bullpen, this week might be a nice, low-pressure way to see how he handles the ninth. (Jen McCaffrey, The Athletic)
Unlike Jansen, Roman Anthony’s Red Sox career is just getting started. Barring a blockbuster offseason trade, all eyes will be on the number one prospect in baseball at the start of Spring Training in 2025, as he pushes to make the MLB team out of camp. Here’s a look at what makes Anthony such a special talent. (Alex Speier, Boston Globe)
Anthony won’t be the only special young talent with a big bat in the Red Sox lineup next year, though, because Triston Casas is already there. As if homering three times yesterday wasn’t Casasian enough, he also relayed that the third homer was predicted by Rob Refsnyder while the two of them shared some time in the bathroom.
