News and notes from around Red Sox Nation.
Will the Red Sox sign Alex Bregman this offseason? There is no question that the Sox’s lefty-heavy lineup has been a problem, as has the team’s shaky infield defense. With several left-handed hitting top prospects due to arrive some time next year, one national writer thinks the Red Sox need to make some trades and big moves in free agency. His idea: sign Bregman, move Rafael Devers to first, and trade Triston Casas. (Ken Rosenthal, The Athletic)
And yeah, let’s face it: it’s not too early to start talking about the offseason. With last night’s extra-inning loss to the Yankees, the Sox’s playoff odds now sit at just five percent. (Chris Cotillo, MassLive)
But maybe Tanner Houck can revive some hope tonight. The Red Sox were monitoring the condition of Houck’s shoulder as recently as yesterday, thinking they may give him extra rest. But he’ll take the mound tonight as planned. (Chris Cotillo, MassLive)
If the Sox need any inspiration to go on an improbable run and make the postseason, taking a look at the 2004 team would be a good idea. Luckily, Netflix has announced a new documentary about the team. (Mike Cole, NESN)
But this certainly doesn’t look like a team that’s poised to make a run. The Red Sox have been the third-worst team in baseball since the All-Star break, though Craig Breslow thought at the time that they were productive at the trade deadline. (Brian Foisy, WEEI)
Ultimately, it’s looking like we only have a few weeks left of Red Sox baseball. In fact, Fenway Park is already being used for other things: firefighter training. (Nick Stoico, Boston Globe)
