BOSTON — The Red Sox are giving Luis García one last shot to make an impact.
García, who was placed on the injured list with right elbow inflammation on Aug. 27, was reinstated Saturday. The Red Sox optioned Cooper Criswell to Triple-A Worcester in order to make room for the 37-year-old.
García’s time in Boston hasn’t gone so well, as he notched a 10.32 ERA in his first 11 appearances of out the bullpen — allowing 13 earned runs off 21 hits (including four home runs) in 11 1/3 innings pitched. The Red Sox clearly saw enough in their trade deadline addition, pulling the trigger relatively quickly when he started feeling discomfort in his elbow.
Boston sent him on a quick rehab assignment, where he tossed a scoreless inning on September 17 at Triple-A Lehigh Valley for the WooSox.
Criswell has been surprisingly effective for the Red Sox, notching a respectable 4.08 ERA in 18 starts and 26 total appearances in the big leagues this season. Boston has turned its attention toward Richard Fitts to fill the final spot in its rotation, however, making the 28-year-old expendable for the final stretch of games.
The Red Sox and Twins are scheduled to take the field at Fenway Park at 4:10 p.m. ET on Saturday, and the action can be seen on NESN following an hour of pregame coverage.
