ONE BIG TAKEAWAY
The Red Sox had the bases loaded with no outs in the top of the eighth inning, trailing the Mets 3-1, but couldn’t capitalize and managed to only plate Jarren Duran on a sacrifice fly by pinch hitter Enmanuel Valdez.
Kutter Crawford and Justin Slaten each made one costly mistake by giving up home runs to Francisco Lindor and Mark Vientos, respectively. Crawford gave up the two-run shot to Lindor in the bottom of the third inning to give the Mets a 2-0 lead before Nick Sogard knocked in Masataka Yoshida with a single to center in the fifth. Vientos doubled New York’s lead with his 22nd dinger of the season.
After allowing the Red Sox to get within a run for the second time in the game, the Mets added four runs in the bottom of the eighth with Chris Martin on the hill for Boston. Martin gave up three hits and two runs before Pete Alonso capped off New York’s scoring with a two-run homer.
The Red Sox offense couldn’t solve Mets pitching, stranding seven base runners and striking out 15 times in the loss.
STARS OF THE GAME
— Lindor launched his 30th home run of the season to give the Mets a 2-1 lead in the third inning. He finished 2-for-4 from the plate with three RBIs.
— Alonso recorded his 31st home run of the season to secure the Mets victory in the eighth inning. He went 2-for-4 from the plate with two RBIs.
— David Peterson struck out 11 Red Sox batters across six innings, allowing one run on six hits for his ninth win for the Mets this season.
