The Boston Red Sox began a three-game series against the New York Mets with a 4-1 loss on Monday night at Citi Field.
Boston fell 70-68 with the loss, while New York improved to 74-64.
Check out the full box score here.
ONE BIG TAKEAWAY
Boston’s failed to have both the offense and the pitching click together in recent weeks. Such was the case again Monday night in the Big Apple.
Brayan Bello had solid stuff and attacked hitters, though the Mets capitalized on their chances against the Red Sox starter. Boston made a pair of errors and New York cashed in on the extra outs to stack four runs against Bello through five innings. Bello struck out four Mets while walking just one.
The Mets received a strong start from Luis Severino, a former AL East foe who’s gone through his share of ups and downs with New York this season. The ex-Yankee rose to the occasion against the Red Sox, allowing just one earned run in seven innings. Boston had a chance to cash in with two runners on in the sixth inning before outfielder Brandon Nimmo robbed Rafael Devers of a run-scoring hit with a diving catch.
The same scenario presented itself in the eighth inning. This time, Mets reliever Danny Young got Devers to roll over to second base and end the frame as the potential tying run for the Red Sox.
STARS OF THE GAME
— Jarren Duran drove in Boston’s first run for the second consecutive day.
— New York’s Francisco Lindor extended his on-base streak to 31 games and drove in a run in a multi-hit performance.
— Severino allowed just one earned run with two walks and five strikeouts against the Red Sox.
