The star third baseman, who is only 30 years old, was one of the top free agents available this season. Bregman is a two-time All-Star and a two-time World Series champion. Although he posted a 4.1 bWAR in 2024, he did not perform at his best heading into free agency. In the past, he had exceptional plate discipline, but this year, he significantly reduced his walk rate. He walked only 6.9% of the time in 2024, down from 12.7% in 2023. His career-best walk rate was 17.2% in 2019 when he led MLB with 119 walks.
This year, he walked only 44 times, and as a result, his 118 OPS+ was the lowest full-season mark of his career. He also finished the season as a Silver Slugger Award finalist after hitting 30 doubles, 26 home runs, and 75 RBI last season. Bregman took home his first Gold Glove Award at third base, joining five-time winner Doug Rader as the only Astros third baseman to win the award. Bregman beat out finalists Ernie Clement of the Toronto Blue Jays and Jose Ramirez of the Cleveland Guardians. He led American League third basemen in fielding percentage (.972), assists (242), total changes (355), and putouts (103).
After being drafted by the Astros with the No. 2 pick in the 2015 MLB Draft, Bregman is now headed to [Team Name] after entering free agency for the first time in his career.
