Royals 8, Red Sox 4: Whiz Witt

MVP candidate and nepo success story Bobby Witt Jr. runs roughshod over our boys.

The Red Sox were down 2-0 before I got to the computer to start recapping the game tonight after baths, bedtimes and whatnot. Technically it was just 1-0 except on the pitch I tuned in Michael Massey was the culprit to make it 2-0 so that probably counts.

It sucked.

Anyhow, the Sox were already losing because of Bobby Witt Jr., who will be a main character tonight:

The Sox followed up with brawn, as Romy Gonzalez hit a homer to make it 3-2:

To show everyone they were serious, Danny Jansen hit a homer to make it 4-2, and the Sox were cruising. But not for long.

Suppose you were tired and rested your eyes and when they opened, it was 7-4 Royals. Kutter Crawford allowed six runs. You’d be like: What the hell? But also you’d understand, and your readers would understand. Provided you have them. And so but then Witt is up again and it’s like 7-4? Fine. We can make that up. Except it’s not 7-4 anymore. You idiots. You morons:

So it was 8-4. Eyes? Rested. Soul? Tired. Patience? Exhausted. We can’t lose to the Royals like this when down 0.5 games in the Wild Card race. But even in a two-on, one out situation like the one the Sox found themselves in the seventh, nothing came of it, with Wilyer Abreu striking out to end the threat.

It almost got worse but Ceddanne Rafaela did this:

But as I wrote that, and wrote a long paragraph about something I realized later was totally wrong, the Sox went 1-2-3 in the eighth and evaporated after that. They’ve still got plenty of time, but that would’ve been nice to have. But they have time. Yet it would have been nice. And so on.
