Just how bad is Boston right now?
There are good teams, mediocre teams, bad teams, and the 2024 Chicago White Sox.
What do you need to know?
They are now managed by former Red Sox outfielder Grady Sizemore.
They didn’t trade their best/most valuable player, Garrett Crochet, who publicly stated that, in the event of a trade, he wouldn’t pitch the postseason and would shut himself down if his new team didn’t offer him a contract extension.
They’ve lost 109 games entering today. 109! The Dodgers and Phillies are tied with the most wins in baseball at 84.
After 141 games (the number of games the White Sox have played so far) the 2003 Detroit Tigers, who would infamously go on to lose 119, had a record of 37-104. This is a bad team!
And yet…when they played the Red Sox in June the series ended in a 2-2 split.
And that’s when the Boston pitchers could still pitch. That’s when the Boston hitters still hit.
Is this going to be the most embarrassing weekend of the season? Stay tuned!
Since the beginning of August, when he topped out at a .304 batting average, Rafael Devers is hitting .196/.266/.366. Just four of his hits were home runs and only six were doubles.
In the same time frame, Jarren Duran slashed .303/.361/.582 with 7 homers and 9 steals!
Since, uh, “June 26th”, Triston Casas is at .250/.354/.368. Those mental at-bats really did help? It was a long layoff and he’s not embarrassing himself out there against big league pitching.
Old friend Andrew Benintendi has actually picked things up since the calendar turned to August: 260/.348/.550 in White Sox garbage time. Hey, good job Benny.
