The Boston Red Sox recalled veteran catcher Tyler Heineman on Tuesday, according to MassLive.com’s Chris Cotillo. The move comes after the Boston Globe’s Alex Speier reported that breakout outfielder Wilyer Abreu was placed on the Injured List with an ankle sprain. Heineman was last in the big leagues in late April.

Tyler Heineman Recalled By Red Sox
Heineman appeared in one game for Boston this season on April 21 against the Pittsburgh Pirates. He was placed on the 10-day IL two days after straining his right hamstring. It was his first time appearing for the Red Sox since coming over off of waivers from the New York Mets.
Heineman debuted in the MLB in 2019 with the Miami Marlins. In 105 games and 249 career MLB at-bats, Heineman has a .217 batting average, 15 RBI, and one home run.
Heineman has played steadily in the minors with Triple-A Worcester this season. In 71 at-bats, he has a .239 average and nearly a .400 on-base percentage. Heineman walked 16 times with Worcester, including four on May 31. He has two homers this campaign, which have come in the last week and a half.
To replace Heineman in Triple-A, catcher and first baseman Mickey Gasper is with the WooSox, according to Worcester T&G Sports’ Tommy Cassell. Gasper batted .283 in 44 games with Double-A Portland this season.

Abreu was having a breakout season in the majors with Boston. In 53 games, the Venezuelan batted .272 with 22 RBI, 26 runs, and six homers. His 1.9 WAR ranked third on the Red Sox behind Tanner Houck and Jarren Duran. Abreu played left, right, and center at times in 2024. Bobby Dalbec, recalled from Worcester on June 2, is replacing the injured Abreu in right field for Boston’s Tuesday matchup with the Braves.
